BAAM's London Anger and Stress Clinic (LASC)
offering specialist ONE-TO-ONE COUNSELLING to
children, teenagers, adults, couples and families in Central London.

LASC has been set up by Mike Fisher in October 2008, and is another arm of the BAAM family of Anger and Stress Management services.  We offer bespoke and purely One-to-One counselling for angry and stressed individuals across the age and social sphere.

Its purpose is to fill the gap left by most practitioners who are reluctant to concentrate on anger and stress issues. The feeling among counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists and psychiatrists has been that anger is a ‘secondary’ emotion, a distraction from the ‘real’ issues confronting their clients.  Most often, they sidestepped anger because of its perceived volatility, intensity and destructive potential.

Typically, anger was medicated out of existence, denied or punished. One symptom of mismanaged anger stems from suppression. People hold back their anger completely until it builds out of control and explodes, invariably at the wrong time and for the wrong reason. The headlines are full of these events: child abuse, domestic violence, suicide, homicide, mass murder.

Your anger is expensive. It could cost you your job, your friends and your self respect. We at the London Anger and Stress Clinic specialise in helping people deal with emotional issues in as little as 12 weeks by using our specialist anger counsellors in individual and group settings.

About The London Anger and Stress Clinic (LASC)

LASC will deal with various aspects of anger and the difficulties it creates.  The Clinic¹s process begins with identifying the situations that trigger anger attacks that are out of proportion to the presenting problem. The Clinic gives people permission to have this unpleasant but perfectly normal emotion. Then, the Clinic relieves their frustration by giving them a choice: a more constructive way of getting this painful pressure out of their system.

People on the receiving end of mismanaged anger are also in pain. The Clinic teaches them how to stop behaving in ways that make the situation more hurtful.  People keep making the same mistakes because no one ever told them what their other options are. They come in to the Clinic feeling discouraged and unable to cope. After people meet with us about managing their anger, they leave with many new choices and new tools. They can¹t wait to try them out on their jobs or at home with their spouses, their parents, or their children. They come back with reports of their successes and they want to know more, so we tell them. The more successes they have, the better their relationships become, and the better they feel about themselves.

Using the Aggression Prevention Training (APT) system of counselling, we replace years of self-doubt with self-respect, discouragement with encouragement, fear with courage, negative control with the positive, and insecurity with security within oneself. It does not take twelve years on a couch. We do not have that kind of time and neither do you!

Empower yourself with the Clinic’s techniques. We teach people how to use an angry situation to strengthen our most important and most overlooked relationship, i.e. our relationship with ourselves. We learn to stop being afraid of our anger and to start seeing negative situations as opportunities to do something productive and constructive for both ourselves and our loved ones.

Our three-prong approach to treating anger issues at the Clinic are:

  1. We address the current anger by teaching the client to recognize anger and to validate it for themselves and other. We also teach them how to recognize mischief, what people do to get across the point that they are angry and how not to engage in other's mischief. Mischief is defined as doing anything that does not need to be done or saying anything that does not need to be said. In summary, by learning the definitions of anger and mischief and its four purposes and how to recognize them, the client immediately has new anger tools to use to disengage from mischief and being baited. Anger if often like a tug of war. We teach the clients that they have the choice not to pick up the rope, to do the unexpected. Another tool we teach is to "Agree to disagree". It is a verbal form of answering that disengaging the client from mischievous arguments.

  2. We address the anger that people have been stuffing for years. This anger can cause them to over react to current anger. It can cause them illnesses in the present such as acid reflux, headaches, anxiety, etc. We teach them how to get rid of this built-up anger and to release it using another simple but highly effective tool giving them instant relief.

  3. We address the issues that caused them to stuff the anger and caused the situations that originally shoved them through our doors; their "attitudes". Unless we are able to identify and replace their mistaken attitudes, they will eventually react and find themselves in another anger outburst situation.

LASC’S individual counselling is inappropriate in a group of strangers; it is personal and needs to be conducted via One-on-One sittings. We teach 8 key rules also known as the ‘Golden Rules for managing Anger and Stress’ and by integrating them into your life will make the world of difference to you and those around you. We also use several anger, stress and shame evaluation procedures pre-and post the counselling process to help and verify a change in the level of anger, stress and shame management.

Step 1: ASSESSMENT
All incoming clients are evaluated by Mike Fisher to determine if there are any dual diagnoses of mental health and/or substance abuse outside of anger issues. While we specialise in anger and stress management, Mike Fisher also offers marriage, family and general counselling.

If a client needs psychotropic medication, the clinic makes a referral to a psychiatric practice. Likewise, if a client has medical problems, the clinic makes a referral to a medical facility of the client's choice or convenience.

During this initial process, we complete anger and stress questionnaires and, in many cases, one including  shame.

The primary reason we carry out assessments is to find out why the person is coming to the Clinic. What issues of anger are the clients bringing and what do the clients hope to accomplish while they are in treatment? We ask about their history of anger. It also gives the staff a chance to explain the Clinic's services and our theory of how better anger management skills benefits everyone.

Step 2: THE COUNSELLING PROCESS
At the end of the assessment the client and the counsellor discuss the needs of the client and the services that would best meet the needs based on severity of issues, availability of client for appointments and classes, requirement of insurance or mandate for level of counsellor certification or preference of client and financial situation and the availability of a matching counsellor and classes.  We also discuss financial arrangements of how the client expects to pay for services.

We will also provide full reports and documentation to fulfil rulings by The Courts, Social Services, Probation Services or any other local governmental department that mandated the person to treatment.

Mike Fisher will then allocate your counsellor after assessing the client’s needs and the counsellor’s specialist field.  For background biographies of our counsellors, follow this link:
